Thirlwell joined Town following his release from Sky Bet League 2 side Carlisle United at the end of the 2014-2015 season.
Paul started his career in 1997 at Sunderland and after making his Premiership debut in a memorable 4-1 win over Chelsea went on to make over 80 appearances for the “Black Cats”. Paul was also called up to represent England at Under 21 level during his spell on Wearside.
Leaving Sunderland in 2004, Paul spent a season at Sheffield United before moving to Derby County and eventually Carlisle United in 2007. Over the nine years with the Cumbrians, he would go on to make over 220 appearances.
Despite not being a regular on the goalscoring list, Paul chipped in with one of the most important goals in Carlisle’s history when his goal on the last day of the season against Millwall helped secure Carlisle's position in League 1.
The experienced midfielder joined us in May 2015, and as well as being a steadying influence on the pitch, became Head of Youth Development in May 2016.
